The Old Granary in Tübingen

The old granary in Tübingen has been much extended and remodelled in the 500 years since it was first built. The architect's task was to transform it into a museum of local history, whereby one of the major exhibits would constitute the historic building itself. The old, still existing structures were to be preserved as far as possible, without historicist attempts to reinstate or re-create. The first floor windows and the entrances had to be replaced. For the windows, the architect proposed inserting specially designed metal frames, braced inside the window reveal. The glass panel is affixed to the masonry behind. This proposal drew much comment and criticism from town councillors and locals.
