Conversion and renovation work on probably the oldest barracks building in Bavaria was completed in June 1992. This simple, unpretentious building is nonetheless an important structure in the town context, in view of its dominant position and size. The 160 m length, alongside the Danube, is a distinctive, prominent feature of the town's southern elevation. One third of the building is now converted into a museum of abstract art, housing a collection of international importance. The town of Ingolstadt had acquired the collection in 1981, but was not in a position to provide new exhibition space until a proposal was put forward to use part of the barracks.
