Palace of Justice in Lérida, Spain

The cathedral on the hill overlooking the old Catalonian town of Lérida bears witness of a great past, but the quarter del Canyeret in the old town at the foot of the hill was in a desolate state both with regard to the urban planning and sociological situation. The steep slopes of the hill were exposed to erosion and every tempest caused more earth and rocks to be washed down and over the busy main street, the Calle Mayor. The measure to reinforce the slopes by means of an earth-retaining wall prepared the base for a multiform revitalization scheme of the quarter: enhancing the urban planning situation by new and appealing buildings, improving the infrastructure and ameliorating the sociological conditions.
