Extension Städel-Museum, Frankfurt

The beginnings of the Städel Art Institute - today comprising a museum, a school and its extensions - go back to the year 1782 and the private collection of Johann Friedrich Städel. Städel, who was a keen supporter and sponsor of young artists, was as devoted to collecting works of art as to making them accessible to the public, an awareness arising out of the 18th century spirit of enlightened self-interest. From Städel's death in 1816, and a first moving out of the collection into a larger building in 1833 to the completion of this extension in 1990, the museum witnessed moves to larger buildings to accommodate the ever increasing collection, changes, additions, extensions and even severe war damage.
