Residential Building in Southport, N.Y.

Surrounded by marsh grass, the house lies on the east side of Long Island. It was intended to be a refuge where one could spend an undisturbed vacation with children and friends. Even upon entering the house on the ground floor, one gets a sense of the spaciousness of the upper living area: a slanted mirror on a steel console adds an extra dimension to the hall. This mirrored object, like several pieces of furniture, was designed by the architects themselves. The stairwell is a high-ceilinged space illuminated by skylights.
