Cultural and Meeting Centre Kartause Ittingen/CH
The planned program included a conference and meeting centre for adults and youth groups with accommodation, training and dining facilities, a social enterprise for 33 inmates with a sheltered workshop, administrative and operational spaces, and a small restaurant for visitors. The necessary alterations to the existing building structure due to the new use were carried out as gently as possible, and wherever feasible and financially responsible, the original building fabric was preserved. However, to fulfill the spatial program, additional new buildings had to be constructed. The buildings of the outer enclosure thus not only exhibit very different uses and existing wall and roof structures, but also clearly distinguish between old and new elements, creating a dynamic contrast.
