The Dachau-East district was developed in the 1960s according to the urban planning principles prevalent at the time. The originally planned large central building was never constructed, so the necessary shops and service facilities established themselves in the surrounding buildings. It wasn't until 1979 that the Dachau city council decided to develop this central location in Dachau-East, but with a significantly reduced floor space. This modest program for a "district centre" failed to provide either the desired diversity of uses or a striking building mass that could have lived up to such a claim.
