The Appenzell-Außerrhoden Cantonal Bank is located on Obstmarkt in Herisau. The ground floor and first floor form the building's base; they contain the public areas, including a two-storey banking hall. Offices occupy the second through fourth floors, while the top floor houses three meeting rooms and a cafeteria. Beneath the two levels of the underground parking garage, the third basement level contains archive and technical rooms, and the fourth basement level houses the customer vault and bank vault. The facades of the new building reflect the scale and character of the existing historical buildings in the Appenzell region. The load-bearing columns are clad in copper. This material patines very quickly due to exposure to the climate, becoming dull and darker. In contrast, the lead patines in the opposite direction, becoming lighter and its colour harmonizing with the facades of shingled houses.
