The Botanical Garden and greenhouses of the University of Oulu in northern Finland were primarily designed for research and teaching, but they are also open to the public. Oulu lies approximately 170 km south of the Arctic Circle. The climate in this region is highly variable. Ice and snow, darkness and cold during the winter months, and the contrasting constant light and warmth of the summer placed great demands on the construction and attention to detail. The greenhouses are pyramid-shaped.
