Construction on the immense structure, which was once intended to be the world's most modern slaughterhouse during the Gaullist era, was halted in 1973 due to changes in the layout necessitated by refrigerated transport. In 1980, twenty-seven architects were invited to submit proposals for transforming this unfinished structure into a museum of science and technology. Adrien Fainsilber won this limited competition with his design. The existing structure covers almost four hectares of land. Four rows of five rectangular reinforced concrete pillars each are spanned by eight-metre-high steel truss girders with a 65-metre span.
