Tromsø is the largest city in northern Norway. Located at approximately 70 degrees latitude, it has an Arctic climate and lies in the land of the midnight sun. Tromsø could be considered a border city of European civilization. Its connections with the continent, with Russia, Finland, and the Barents Sea have always been of great importance. The old city centre consisted of wooden houses in the Norwegian Empire style from the late 19th century. These houses now stand side by side with new buildings constructed in the last 30 years. The result is an environment of conflicts and contrasts; often surprising, but never boring.
