The philosophers of the Free University of Berlin, previously scattered across various buildings, were to be given a common home with this new building. The site is located opposite the humanities institutes on the edge of a traditional villa district, whose scale the new building had to reflect. At the same time, we faced the challenge of developing not just general office space for humanities departments, but a dedicated space for the core work of the Philosophy Institute. This offered—in contrast to typical university planning—the opportunity to balance the individual spatial interpretation of work processes with the continued flexibility of the building structure to allow for future modifications.
