Ice Rink in Munich's Olympic Park

The existing open-air ice rink in Munich's Olympic Park was spanned with a lightweight, flat-topped structure suspended from an arch. This compression arch is a delicate, three-chord tubular truss made of steel. It transfers the roof loads to the abutments. The arch is held in position and stabilized against buckling in the horizontal direction by a net of two opposingly curved sets of cables. This cable net supports a wooden grid over which a translucent plastic film made of polyester woven fabric with a PVC coating on both sides is stretched.
