Lock to the Aviary, Hellabrunn Zoo, Munich

The aviary for larger birds such as ibises and herons covers an area of approximately 50 x 100 metres. Visitors follow a path that runs alongside the watercourse – without any branches and as a one-way system – to ensure the birds have as much undisturbed space as possible and to minimize human disturbance. Two airlocks serve as the entrance and exit. These areas, constructed of concrete, are designed in perfect harmony with the flowing forms of the aviary's wire mesh, achieving a formal consistency even in the design of the door frames.
