The existing parcel sorting station had a track and loading facility that was no longer adequate for the volume of traffic, both in terms of area and safety. Protection against wind and weather was completely insufficient. The existing sawtooth-shaped ramps, with a length of 185 m, were to be extended to 450 m in the new building and designed as a terminal station. The aim was to ensure efficient and rapid handling of an average of 40,000 parcels and 25,000 packages per day, thereby saving on personnel and material costs and reducing loading and unloading times. The conversion from manual loading operations to a largely automated conveyor system was planned. The individual functional areas of the existing building sections were not to be fundamentally reorganized.
