Our design for the new J. Sainsbury supermarket in Canterbury won a prize in a limited competition in 1982. The site is located east of the city centre, offering unobstructed views of the city dominated by the cathedral. Our project comprises three articulated, cantilevered spaces for sales, storage with preparation and receiving areas, and adjoining offices for administration and staff. All spaces are on the ground floor. The flat roofs rest on slender rolled steel beams supported by twin steel tube masts and tie rods. In the rather unremarkable surroundings, the silver masts and struts lend height and vertical emphasis to the otherwise low-rise building, creating a visual echo of the spire and battlements of the distant cathedral.
