The assertion that, in the case of an industrial building whose dimensions—exterior and interior—are determined not only by its length, width, and height, but by every detail of its appearance, is dictated by its purpose and economic viability, that the most important task of planning is conscious design is certainly inadmissible. Autonomous design contradicts the laws of sound economics, which are solely governed by reason and under which alone the construction of such a building can be justified. The architect here has a more fundamental task to accomplish: to create order, that is, to arrange the details that comprise the building according to their significance for fulfilling its purpose.
