While the use of traditional brick ensures that the exterior of the buildings respects the surrounding architecture in both material and form, the interior of the arcade represents an attempt to break new ground. Extensive studies preceded the design of this space. The new arcade incorporates all the essential design elements of the classic 19th-century covered shopping arcade, but in a critically interpretive and contemporary form. Examples of arcades in London, Brussels, Paris, Turin, Milan, and Naples were studied and analyzed before the final decision was made.
