In 1944, the shipping magnate Sir William Burrell (1861-1958) donated his extensive art collection to the city of Glasgow, along with the funds for a museum. The collection encompasses artworks from Europe, the Middle East, and the Far East. It includes stone portals and window frames, carved wooden latticework, wooden ceilings and furniture, tapestries, stained glass, paintings and drawings, as well as decorative arts in stone, wood, metal, porcelain, and glass. Just as Sir Burrell was not interested in only a few specialized areas, he also collected objects from many different periods. And it was his particular wish that three rooms from Hutton Castle, where he had retired, be reconstructed in the new building.
