As a replacement for a slightly lower-lying hut dating from 1890, the Dom Hut was built in 1957 in the Zermatt Valley above Randa. Since club huts must be constructed under extreme conditions at altitudes of up to 3,300 metres within a very short timeframe – the snow-free season lasts three and a half to four months – space-saving construction is still essential. Given the nearly century-long tradition of hut building, any new design could not be merely superficial.
