Schwabentorsteg in Freiburg Im Breisgau

As part of the expansion of the busy Schlossbergring, it was necessary to connect the old town with the Schlossberg recreational area for pedestrians as frequently as possible. This was achieved through pedestrian bridges at intervals of three to five hundred metres. The bridge that presented the greatest challenge in integrating it, given the existing structural constraints, was the Schwabentorsteg, located near the historic Schwabentor gate. The implemented design integrates very well into the overall ensemble. The construction, with its overhead laminated timber beams that also serve as the roof, allows for a very thin suspended walkway. This creates an airy spatial effect and affords pedestrians unobstructed views.
