Café in New York

Selecting the book as a design concept for a café in this book shop in Manhattan might, at first, not appear to be out of the ordinary, but the implementation of the concept certainly is: books dangle from the ceiling – singly or in stacks – threaded on steel rods. The counter and the café zone are embraced by a curved wall that seems as if it were sheathed in the fluttering pages of a book. Upon closer inspection, the surface turns out to be wallpaper. To achieve this look, scans were made of open books – bringing about a trompe-l’?il effect. The small folding tables for reading made of walnut and attached to the wall with leather straps were inspired by books – both open and closed.
