The steeply sloping site lies in an old charcoal burner's district, surrounded by black slag heaps, workers' houses, and industrial buildings dating from the late 19th century. Their architecture, constructed of almost black brick, is characterized by pillars, arches, and massive walls. The imposing structures are covered with wide, overhanging roofs. As in Anderlues, the special needs school is connected to a school complex of prefabricated pavilions. The design is based on the same principles, but different materials were used. The choice of load-bearing masonry pillars was based both on the surrounding building style and on the need to retain the uneven terrain with walls.
