Laboratory for Water Management in Neubiberg

Amid a mixture of buildings that have accrued over the decades, on the site of a military university in Neubiberg, one unexpectedly encounters a building that – owing to the clarity of its form and the proportion of its facades – stands out. The lower third of the laboratory has a wood-frame structure clad in larch boarding with a light-toned scumble finish. The boarding extends past the building, providing definition to the yard. In the upper reaches, a double-skin, translucent screen of polycarbonate sheet filters the light that enters the building. The tapered glue-laminated structural members in the hall easily span 18 metres; they were developed in close cooperation with the structural engineers.
