Gleinstätten Castle, even in its interior, is such a typical and successful example of Italian-influenced Styrian castle architecture of the 16th and 17th centuries that a functional "clearing out" was never even considered during the preliminary planning phase. The challenge was to find a solution that would preserve and secure the historical fabric while simultaneously meeting the diverse requirements of the planned use – primarily as a school. The spatial possibilities were inherently limited by the existing structure.
