Freiburg Museum of Art History - Extension in the Former Slaughterhouse

The former slaughterhouse is one of the few remaining monuments in the city dating from the Restoration period. It was built between 1834 and 1836 according to the plans of the renowned organ builder Alois Moser. Disused for several years, it burned to the ground in 1975. The imposing roof structure with its distinctive hipped roof was completely destroyed. Despite the ruin's condition, the decision was made to rebuild it as an extension of the Kunsthistorisches Museum (Museum of Art History). This added 1,340 square metres of new exhibition space. The existing museum buildings – the Hotel Ratzé and Museum "64" – and the former slaughterhouse were given a new, shared entrance and connected by an underpass.
