Over the past few years, the city of Dachau has constructed two so-called "district centres" to improve infrastructure in its new residential areas. The most recently built, in the Dachau-East area, was inaugurated in December 1982. A large number of desirable and necessary businesses had established themselves in the adjacent residential area over the years in a haphazard and random arrangement. Therefore, the designation as a "district centre" was less about offering a diverse range of businesses and more about making a strong architectural and spatial statement.
