Flexibility was a key planning criterion for the new INMOS Microchip Company plant: a short planning phase and time-saving construction were the starting points. The design had to be suitable for any building site. At the start of planning, the location was not yet determined; ultimately, Newport was chosen, primarily due to its excellent transport connections and strong job market. The smooth execution of subsequent construction phases must not disrupt ongoing production. The building program includes office and utility spaces on the one hand, and the facilities for microchip production on the other. The production area requires exceptionally high-quality environmental conditions. Due to the extremely dust-sensitive manufacturing process, the air must be absolutely clean.
