Sports Hall in Baden-Baden

In Baden-Baden's western district, the vocational school, the commercial school, and the Richard Wagner Gymnasium were combined into a school centre for over 2,200 students on a sloping site with an elevation difference of almost 45 metres. The sports hall, unlike any of the other school buildings in terms of its size and function, possesses its own distinct architectural style. The sloping terrain offered sufficient space for the hall and its adjacent outdoor sports facilities only on its crest. A rectangular cube, at least 8.50 metres high, would have disrupted the undulating landscape and would have diminished the staggered arrangement of the individual school buildings.
