The Arnold Bergsträsser Institute, founded in 1959, focuses on basic social science research in the developing world, complemented and supported by practice-oriented applied research projects. The construction project was tightly funded; the funding body, the Volkswagen Foundation, demanded adherence to the estimated costs, which was achieved.
