The organizational scheme of the water treatment plant served as the starting point for the building layout. The inlet pumping station was to be located as close as possible to and perpendicular to the inlet channel, and the distances between the individual buildings were to be kept to a minimum. The size and shape of the site necessitated a change in the direction of the "process line" within the treatment building, and by rotating the sulfur reservoirs and the sulfur pumping station by 45°, the direction of the adjacent IJsselmeer dike was incorporated.
