To free the city centre from car traffic, a one-way ring road was built in Lörrach. Directly in front of the train station, the ring road was designed in a sunken position to allow for both smooth vehicular traffic flow and a safe pedestrian crossing from the station to the post office and the city centre. The specifications for the design of the station square thus came from the traffic engineers. This necessity of traffic planning—the complete separation of the station from its forecourt—had to be countered with design elements within a unified framework.
