On an almost square 925 m² plot in the Setagaya Ward residential area, two elongated rows of houses with a total of 14 apartments ranging from 72 to 115 m² were arranged to create a courtyard passage between them. Straight external staircases, which bisect the rows of houses from the courtyard and divide them into individual units—the longer, three-storey section into three units, the shorter, two-storey section into two—provide access to the upper-floor apartments. The ground-floor apartments are accessed directly from the passage. Building regulations required a reduction of the second floor: it was therefore set back from the facade and incorporated as the upper level of the duplex apartments on the first floor.
