Adult Education Centre with Dormitory Run by a Trade Union in Djurönäset/Sweden

In 1976, the Swedish Public Sector Employees' Union (PTK) began exploring the possibility of establishing its own adult education centre. Recent labour law legislation, particularly regarding employee participation, placed greater demands on the continuing education of employees. The PTK, seeking a building where groups could live together during week-long courses, was essential for a peaceful working environment and fostered social interaction. In June 1977, the PTK purchased a plot of land in the foothills of the Värmdö municipality, 45 km from Stockholm, and subsequently invited several architects to participate in a competition, which was decided in October 1977. The proposal by architects Larsson, Thalberg, and Tham was selected as the basis for further design work.
