The 1972 regional reform merged the Berchtesgaden district, the southern part of the Laufen an der Salzach district, and the town of Bad Reichenhall to form the present-day Berchtesgadener Land district. The responsibilities of the district administration were to be consolidated from six buildings in Bad Reichenhall, Berchtesgaden, and Laufen into a new central office building. The design won first prize in a 1975 competition; the construction contract was awarded in 1976.
