To counteract increasing urban sprawl, the city of Kiel developed a site in Kiel-Suchsdorf from its building land reserves in 1976, enabling it to offer affordable single-family home plots within the city limits. At several prominent locations, a denser residential development was planned on plots of 300/320 square metres to structure the area. Here, 20 terraced houses with variable layouts were built. These gable-fronted terraced houses differ from conventional types in their floor plan arrangement; compared to detached houses, they are inexpensive yet still suitable for families.
