The new building for the 11th grade of the vocational school for metal and electrical engineering on Godehardstraße is a first step towards filling an urban open space that is gradually being created behind Göttingen's main train station by the demolition of larger facilities. The planned concentration of all of Göttingen's vocational schools in this area, which is characterized by its convenient location near the city centre (a 10-minute walk to the market square) and major transport routes (direct access to the railway and regional road network), is seen as an opportunity to overcome the typical "behind the train station" situation so common in such urban areas. From this urban planning perspective, the new school building carries particular symbolic significance.
