Community Centre in Pesch/Cologne
The community centre is situated in the heart of an open residential area, comprised of multi-storey, highly articulated apartment buildings surrounded by single-family homes. To the northeast lie a kindergarten and the mature trees of the historic cemetery. The community centre buildings are grouped around an atrium-like forecourt, their continuous, opposing sloping roofs accentuating their low-rise surroundings. The building complex shown here represents the first construction phase. In a second phase, the ancillary rooms on the south side will be replaced by additional community and youth rooms, as well as a sexton's residence. The staggered heights and the spatial division through folding walls allow for diverse uses. The rectory, attached to the community centre on the south side of the forecourt, is a flat-roofed, L-shaped structure enclosing a walled courtyard.
