The 32-hectare sports park, whose third and final phase included the ice rink, was built on a former mining site as a recreational centre for the neighboring districts and the city as a whole. The individual construction phases—swimming centre, children's playgrounds, and ice rink—were completed over six years. A pedestrian street, bordered by concrete trellises, runs through the area as a central access and communication axis, and also serves as a venue for open-air exhibitions.
