A village within a village. The buildings of the Herdern colony—a good dozen in the immediate village area alone—are clustered in a semicircle around the old castle. As a cohesive group, they form a significant part of the village of Herdern. The colony not only appears as a distinctive part of the village from the outside, but also possesses almost everything an independent community needs: in addition to residential and dormitory buildings, there are catering, recreational, and leisure facilities; the large farm with all its buildings, the vineyard, the cheese dairy, the slaughterhouse, the factory's sheltered workshops, and those of the machine repair, carpentry, and metalworking shops serve as workplaces.
