Old Town Renovation »Lower Gate« in Bietigheim

The renovation and redesign of the "Unteres Tor" (Lower Gate) old town area, located between the Metter River and the main street, was carried out from 1976 onwards, following a competition decision made in 1974. The project developer was Bietigheimer Wohnbau GmbH, which had already been presented with a concept about ten years earlier. This concept envisioned a complex of low-rise buildings that would architecturally contrast with the existing, traditional small-town structure surrounding the area. In the meantime, both the desired uses of the buildings and the overall design were the subject of lively debate. The discussion increasingly focused on the question of whether and how integration into the traditional townscape was advisable and possible.
