Roof Structure Above a Residential Building of Viennese Ringstrasse Architecture

The building at Währinger Straße 2-4, erected in 1884 by the architect Ludwig Tischler as a residential complex, is one of the monumental buildings surrounding the Votive Church and an important element of the Ringstrasse architecture, embodying the essential stylistic features of Viennese Historicism. The imposing polygonal domes that crowned the roof above the robust central and side projections—and which decisively accentuated this representative and monumental residential architecture—were destroyed during the war and later replaced by tent-like roofs. With the comprehensive renovation of the building and the planning of terraced apartments in its roof area, it has now become possible to remove the extraneous roof forms and erect a new roof structure in their place, whose domed elements correspond to those of the original roof form, thus restoring the building to its original scale.
