Housing Development in Hamburg

 - Emilia Margaretha

Situated on an island in the River Elbe in the southern part of Hamburg, Wilhelmsburg is a district of strongly contrasted urban spaces, with extensive harbour, industrial and agricultural areas, different residential developments and a lot of green open space. The location is also dis-sected by motorways and railway lines. With the project “Leap across the Elbe”, the International Building Exhibition (IBA) wished to upgrade a neglected part of the city with a forward-looking model for urban life. The planners spent seven years researching the topics “cosmopolis”, “metrozones” and “cities and climate change” to transform the islands in the River Elbe into an attractive location for housing and work close to the heart of Hamburg. The Schlöperstieg project is one of 36 developments implemented in this context. The New Hamburg Terraces, with an overall area of roughly 6,300 m², are situated at the interface between the existing city and the green spaces designed for the International Garden Show in 2013. An ensemble was created, comprising five U-shaped urban blocks, four of which were designed by LAN Architecture.
