Report: Festival Pavilion of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich

It has been roughly 130 years since the Bavarian State Opera opened its last performance space. All the more understandable, then, that the new pavilion, built for the 2010 opera festival, was intended to be a spectacular structure. Walking on red rubber granulate flooring – reminiscent of a red carpet – one approaches the expressive aluminium shell, inside which a black box is concealed. Designed for 300 visitors, the pavilion hosts a diverse range of events during the festival, from yoga classes and disco nights to experimental music theatre. The program aims to appeal to young people and inspire enthusiasm for opera, whose neoclassical main building is clearly visible from the pavilion. Thus, not only the program but also the architecture bridges the gap between tradition and the present.
