The load-bearing system of the main staircase consists of two vertical I-columns with cantilevered brackets to support the flights of stairs. Horizontal bracing is achieved by fixing the landings to the concrete floor slabs and the hall bridges. The inner strings rise from landing to landing; the outer ones continue over the full storey height. Sheet steel steps with upturned edges are welded to the strings and have an aluminium button-plate finish glued to a reconstituted wood filling. The button-plate flooring to the concrete landings is also fixed with adhesive.
