When designing the pedestrian zone (Königstraße) in Stuttgart, several areas needed to be covered – either to visually divide and break up the zone, or to provide weather protection for areas with specific functions. Since massive structures were deemed unsuitable, light, delicate, and transparent steel constructions were created. This three-part roof covers a large area with service facilities: a kiosk, lockers, telephones, seating, and playground equipment. The roof consists of three interconnected gable roofs, each with a hipped end. The supporting structure of each of the three sections comprises a longitudinal truss girder supported by two four-part columns, with a span of 7.50 m and a cantilever of 2.25 m at each end.
