Urban Planning Context: The site for the new University of Johannesburg was located near the city centre on a former golf course, already crisscrossed by roads, in the western outskirts between the city centre and the northern suburbs. This area already contained a number of medical and educational institutions. University Concept: The new university building was designed for 3,000 to 5,000 students in the first construction phase and a final capacity of 12,000 to 15,000 students, with the possibility of expansion to 20,000. From the outset, the development of the planning concept involved a partnership between architects and faculty within the so-called "University Council Planning Committee."
