In the open-plan ground floor of the "New Town Hall Darmstadt," the aforementioned architects (who did not design the building itself) were tasked with grouping ten specialty shops together in the immediate vicinity of the main entrance—on an almost square, 650-square-metre footprint bordered on one side by a pedestrian walkway—with a clear ceiling height of 3.60 metres. This retail area was intended to showcase the diversity of the offerings and the vibrancy of the sales activity in the spirit of a market hall with a distinctive, unified appearance, whereby the boundaries between individual shops or stalls receded into the background, prioritizing the transparency of the overall complex. Since the centre is open beyond regular business hours, the delicatessen market was designed to remain an attractive destination for passersby even after closing time, providing a comprehensive overview of the available goods.
