Shopping District in Farum/Copenhagen

The new Forum shopping centre in the railway station district north of Copenhagen was initially planned and begun as a much larger complex with 31,500 square metres of retail space. However, public resistance to such a large development outside the old part of town forced a construction halt and a redesign. The new project, completed in 1977, is based on the principles developed during the public debate; the first phase comprises 7,300 square metres of retail space and allows for moderate expansion in later phases. Urban planning concept: Like a small-town neighbourhood, the buildings of the shopping centre are grouped around a pedestrian street, from which narrow cross streets lead to the parking areas to the north and south of the complex.
