The house was to be inserted into a gap in the building line on a small plot of land, within a row of similarly proportioned older houses on the edge of Munich's city centre. This integration required a pitched roof and a "punched facade" with small openings facing the street, while allowing for large openings (studio windows) on the garden side, as well as an office floor in the attic. The basement and ground floor were designed for living and play areas, the first floor for living, and the attic for the office.
